Controlling this function in house ensures we meet and exceed the Heart of America Group standard, creating long-term value for the customer, community and company.

John Schulz

John Schulz - Vice President of Construction

Mr. Schulz joined the Company in 2013 as VP – Construction and is responsible for all project construction activities (planning, bidding, contracting, development, construction) and property renovations, including all contractor coordination. Prior to joining the Company, he was VP – Project Mgmt for Leander Construction from 2010 to 2013, was Project Manager for Kevcon, Inc. and Forest Hill Construction Company from 2007 to 2010, was Senior Project Manager for Ryan Companies from 2005 to 2007, and was Project Manager for The Korte Company from 1986 to 2004. Mr. Schulz received his Bachelor’s degree in Construction from Bradley University of Illinois in 1986.

Dustin Miller

Dustin Miller - Director of Logistics

Mr. Miller joined the Company in 2016 as Director – Logistics and is responsible for construction supply chain management, materials/furniture/equipment ordering, delivery scheduling/tracking/acceptance, warranty oversight, facilities preventative maintenance oversight, evaluating energy efficiency projects, green initiatives/sustainable elements, and other logistics duties. Prior to joining the Company he was Director of Finance for the Quad Cities River Bandits from 2013 to 2016, was Senior Corporate Financial Analyst for Martin Engineering from 2011 to 2013, was an Accounting Manager for the Company from 2004 to 2011, and was employed by the public accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche from 2001 to 2004. Mr. Miller received his Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Finance from St. Ambrose University in 2001 and 1996, respectively.

Alan White

Alan White – Project Manager

Mr. White joined Heart of America Group in 2017 as a Project Manager. He is responsible for overseeing construction projects from start to finish within schedule and budget. Mr. White has nearly 20 years of construction experience and prior to joining Heart of America he worked as Project Manager and Estimator for a firm specializing in commercial and industrial construction. He has a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering from Iowa State University.

Richard Henning

Richard Henning – Project Manager

Mr. Henning joined Heart of America Group full-time in 2016 as a Project Manager. In his current role, he is responsible for managing projects from start to finish, including ensuring the project stays within budget and allocated time frame and researching and meeting with sub-contractors in order to fulfill the architects vision of the building. Mr. Henning interned with Heart of America Group for two summers while attending college and assisted the Construction team in remodeling hotels and retail space. He graduated from Bradley University with a degree in Construction Management and a minor in Business.

Dustin Miller

Scott Myers - Project Manager

Mr. Myers joined the Company in 2012 as Project Manager – Construction and is responsible for the on-site management/oversight (with support from our Project Superintendents and other construction team members) of our development projects. He has extensive experience in site design/lay-out, civil and infrastructure development, and project coordination. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Myers (4th generation construction leadership) has over 30 years experience as an independent construction contractor/consultant, responsible for developing complex hospitality, commercial, retail, and industrial projects from inception through delivery throughout the United States.

Steve Gust - Project Manager

Mr. Gust joined Heart of America Group as a Project Manager in 2016. In his role, he is responsible for managing the construction of new hotels and restaurants and the renovations, remodels, repairs and maintenance for all of Heart of America’s hotels in the Des Moines metro area. Mr. Gust was the Project Superintendent for the newest hotel in Heart of America’s portfolio, The Fairfield Inn & Suites in Altoona, IA. Prior to joining Heart of America, he owned a general contractor firm which specialized in commercial and residential projects of various scopes and sizes.

Brian Blome – Project Superintendent

Mr. Blome joined Heart of America Group in 2009 as the Maintenance Executive overseeing several properties for the Des Moines metro area. During this time, Blome assisted in property renovations and had a hand in the new construction of Heart of America’s boutique hotel, Hotel Renovo. After assisting on the construction side of Hotel Renovo, he moved to construction full-time and was promoted to Project Manager in 2016. Mr. Blome has nearly 20 years of construction and maintenance experience, dating back to high school. Prior to joining Heart of America, he was a supervisor for a property management firm, specializing in the remodels of residential units.

Keith Burford – Project Superintendent

Mr. Burford joined Heart of America Group in 2011 as a Project Superintendent. He is responsible for on-site project coordination, scheduling of sub-contractors, interpreting blueprints and maintaining quality control. He has over 35 years of construction experience, including work in both residential and commercial construction. Burford has helped to construct all types of buildings from banks and retail to hotels and restaurants and has experience as a carpenter in residential construction.

Carole Ivarson – Site Project Assistant

Ms. Ivarson joined Heart of America Group in 2014 as a Site Project Assistant. Ivarson is responsible for assisting all Project Managers, Superintendents, Subcontractors and operations support staff who are developing projects. Prior to joining Heart of America, Ms. Ivarson owned a home improvement company and worked as a Fork Truck Operator at John Deere.
